About FortWhyte Alive Nature Centre

FortWhyte Alive Nature Centre is a 660-acre natural environment and outdoor education centre located in the southwest quadrant of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Originally a sand and gravel quarry, the site was rehabilitated into a complex of lakes, wetlands, forests, and prairie habitats, fostering a rich diversity of flora and fauna. The area supports numerous species of birds, mammals, fish, and plants, making it one of Winnipeg’s prime spots for wildlife observation. Visitors can explore over 10 kilometers of well-maintained trails that traverse wooded areas, wetlands, grasslands, and shorelines. FortWhyte offers year-round activities, including guided hikes, kayaking and canoeing on the central lakes during warmer months, and snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in winter. The site is also home to a bison preserve that helps protect this iconic Canadian species. Educational programs are a cornerstone of FortWhyte Alive, with its interpretive displays, visitor centre, and outreach aimed at promoting ecological awareness and sustainability. The centre features notable landmarks such as the Observation Tower, the bison prairie, and diverse habitat zones that provide excellent opportunities for birdwatching and nature photography. Its accessibility from downtown Winnipeg and family-friendly facilities make FortWhyte Alive a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts and urban nature lovers alike.
